Call for Papers | National Conference on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill by DSNLU: Register Oct 27

About Centre for Criminal Justice and Administration, DSNLU

The Centre for Criminal Justice and Administration, DSNLU has been established with the purpose of providing a platform for discussion and rumination on the area of criminal justice and administration. The Research Centre endeavours to empower students and various stakeholders through workshops, conferences, capacity-building programs, and publications and foster a better understanding of the relationship between criminal justice and its administration. The mission behind the establishment of this Centre is to contribute towards generating deliberation on the contentious issues regarding the field of law and to become a hub for inculcating the idea of Criminal Law and Justice among the students, scholars, academicians, and the community.

About Event

The primary goal of the National Conference is to facilitate a comprehensive and insightful discussion on the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill of 2023. By bringing together legal scholars, practitioners, and stakeholders, it aims to foster a nuanced understanding of the existing legal framework, identify challenges, and explore potential avenues for reform.

Through focused discussions and deliberations, the colloquium aims to identify key challenges and shortcomings in the current Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill of 2023 as against the Indian Penal Code, of 1860. The central focus of the colloquium is to brainstorm and propose potential reform measures to address the identified challenges in criminal law. This includes issues related to enforcement, procedural bottlenecks, and areas where the law may not adequately address contemporary socio-legal concerns. Participants will engage in collaborative efforts to outline pragmatic solutions that can contribute to the evolution of the penal legal landscape in India. The colloquium will serve as a knowledge-sharing platform, where the insights and outcomes will be disseminated through various channels.

Eligibility

Students in any year from any University with a legal background, Academicians, and Legal Practitioners are eligible to apply.

Theme

The BNS Bill will have 356 sections instead of the earlier 511 sections; of which, 175 sections have been amended, 8 new sections have been added, and 22 sections have been repealed. These major changes will inadvertently affect the very foundation of the Criminal Justice System and will further give rise to various questions on diverse aspects of criminal law. Certain controversial areas such as repealing of sedition law, the introduction of capital punishment for new offenses, setting a goal of conviction rate above 90 percent, and many more have to be addressed and deliberated upon by legal luminaries.

This dissemination aims to contribute to a wider understanding of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill reaching not only the participants but also the broader legal community and the public. By achieving these expected outcomes, the Colloquium aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse and development of the legal system in India, promoting fairness and justice in criminal administration.
